One One Seven Productions presents the Toronto premiere of a new Canadian play

Josiah Henson-From Slave to Saviour

This one-person show uses a mix of dance, drama and movement to tell the inspiring, true story of Josiah Henson whose impressive autobiography was the basis for Harriet Beecher-Stowe’s titular character in her groundbreaking novel that sparked the American Civil War; Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Despite the terrible conditions of slavery, where he was beaten, starved and degraded, despite every attempt to break him, Josiah remained unbroken. His remarkable strength of character, unflinchingly honest morals and intractable integrity gave him the strength to survive slavery and to triumphantly gain his freedom. Once free, he used his freedom well and became one of the most important figures in Canadian black history, as preacher, statesman, educator, entrepreneur and author. His incredible legacy remains to this day.

Cassel Miles will take you on an unforgettable experience of the life of Josiah Henson and his extraordinary physical and spiritual journey from slavery to freedom.

“In these complicated and troubling times, we all need inspiring heroes to motivate us. My wish is that the triumphant life story of Josiah Henson will inspire others, young and old, as it has touched and inspired me.” Cassel Miles, performer and producer.
